As we approach Mother’s Day I am reminded of a saying that my mom was very fond of saying to me – the least mechanically inclined of her six children. She had seen me struggle with my hands on many projects. Among these were model assembly, auto repairs, basketball backboard installation and even the assembling of a bicycle just to mention a few. As she would pass by me during these projects she will inevitably say, “If all else fails read the directions.” I wish I could tell you that I appreciated those words of wisdom but I didn’t. However she was, of course, quite right as moms often are.

You and I were created by God and our gracious Heavenly Father has provided for us a wonderful book of instructions called the Bible. It addresses almost every arena of our lives and provides practical wisdom and instruction for life in general. It really is an amazing Book. Here’s the problem, we don’t read it.

As I write this I know that many of us are going through some really tough things. Some of us are worried about some very big things and we actually have good cause to worry. May I recommend that we read and apply Philippians 4:6-8 which will show us how to replace our anxiety with faith and peace. Others of us are struggling with temptations that are pressing in on us and we fear we might give in to them and spiritually fall. Let me
recommend the reading and application of 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 which has some strong promises to claim regarding temptations. Still others are going through very difficult trials. The words of James 1:2-12 were written for just such a time. Please digest these words and obey them for they are tailor made for our trials.

It is truly great that most of us have a Bible with us at all times these days. If we don’t have a pocket New Testament we have it on our smart phones. Carrying the Holy Scriptures on our person is commendable; carrying them in our heart is life changing. As you and I read them, mediate on them, study them and apply them we become different people.

The 1189 chapters and 31,103 verses of the Bible were never meant to sit on our book shelf or coffee table to make our home look good. They were written to be read so that we could become different people, transformed from the inside out. This amazing book will make us wise for salvation (2 Timothy 3:15) as well as enable us to know what is right, what is wrong, how to get right and how to stay right (2 Timothy 3:16). It equips us for every

good work (2 Timothy 3:17) and is our bread (Matthew 4:4), milk (1 Peter 2:2), meat (Hebrews 5:12), and dessert (Psalm 19:10). Thus, it is more important than our necessary food (Job. 23:12).

In closing let me encourage all of us regarding our Bibles. We need to “read it to be wise, believe it to be safe and practice it to be holy.” It is forever a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our paths (Psalm 119:105). So please remember, before all else fails, read the directions.

Blessings,
Pastor Dave
